Why you’ll love this
Ready to take your taco night to the next level? This creamy avocado crema is light, so creamy and one of my favorite ways to elevate taco and nacho dishes.
It’s the perfect topping to add fresh flavors to your favorite fish tacos, burrito bowls, use as a salad dressing, or it even makes a great dip!
The best part is that it’s so easy! It truly takes less than 5 minutes. You’ll just throw all of your ingredients in a food processor and blend into a silky smooth, creamy texture.
As a dietitian I’m always looking for ways to boost the nutrition of my favorite meals, and this avocado lime crema recipe has extra protein from Greek yogurt and healthy fats from avocado.
In fact, each serving has an impressive 3 grams of protein and 4 grams of fiber!
If you’re a fan of guacamole, you’re going to love this easy avocado crema recipe.
You only need a handful of ingredients, so let’s get into what you need to make it next!
Ingredients
- Avocado: You’ll need one ripe avocado for this avocado lime crema. It adds flavor, creaminess and healthy fats to this recipe.
- Greek yogurt: Greek yogurt makes a great high protein swap for sour cream or other typical avocado cream sauce ingredients like heavy cream. It also adds the perfect amount of tangy flavor! Just make sure to grab plain yogurt, not flavored.
- Milk: You’ll use a little bit of milk just to thin the sauce enough. If you want a thinner consistency, you can add more. If you want a thicker crema to use as a dipping sauce, you can always add a little less.
- Lime juice: Fresh lime juice is best, but you can also use lemon juice in a pinch. I always keep fresh limes and fresh avocados on hand to be able to make this quickly!
- Cilantro: Fresh cilantro is one of my favorite herbs, but if you’re not a cilantro fan you can simply omit this ingredient.
- Garlic: Using a fresh garlic clove adds fresh zesty flavor to this crema. If you don’t have any fresh, use garlic powder instead.
- Salt and black pepper
Step-by-step instructions
- Add all ingredients to a food processor (my favorite) or high-speed blender (my favorite and also has a food processor attachment).
- Process on high until the consistency is smooth and creamy. Scrape down sides if necessary in between processing.
- Enjoy on tacos, quesadillas, fajitas, or even as a dip for veggies and tortilla chips.
Recipe FAQ
Can you store leftovers or make it ahead?
Yes! Store extra in an airtight container for up to 3-4 days.
How to prevent browning in leftovers
To help minimize browning, you can either squeeze some extra lime juice on top of the avocado lime crema before storing, or put a piece of plastic wrap directly on the top. If there’s a bit of browning, simply remove the top thin layer before eating (don’t worry, it’s still safe to eat!).
